The whole world turned its eyes on the small Canary Island of La Palma when the Cumbre Vieja started to spew fire in 2021. Warned by an earthquake swarm, a TV Canaria taskforce, including news anchors, editors, camera people and technicians, prepared themselves to cover the imminent outburst. Not knowing where the lava and ash would flow, a mobile production set-up and reliable internet connectivity was crucial to ensure both a high-quality broadcast and the security of the TV crew.
The Solution
Contributing to a complex technical workflow, a total of 30 LiveU field units were deployed in various spots all over the island to cover the volcanic activity from multiple perspectives. Both LiveU’s LU600 and LU800 cellular broadcast solutions came into action to deliver high-quality live feeds from the area, including remote places with challenging internet conditions. LiveU’s mobile technology proved mission-critical allowing reporters to go live from anywhere, with minimal lead time. Even covered with ashes, the LiveU units could be relied upon by the TV crews to function flawlessly.
