The Challenge

Broadcasters have long struggled with the limitations and resource demands of conventional video recording systems. Traditional recording solutions that generate files from SDI signals require starting and stopping the recording process each time video transmission begins and ends, as well as manually adding metadata to the recorded footage. This workflow presents challenges such as securing sufficient human resources for recording and metadata management, as well as preventing human error.

The Solution

To increase efficiency, TV Asahi Corporation, one of Japan’s leading broadcasters, used LiveU Ingest for its Japanese 2024 Lower House election coverage, “Election Station 2024”. The solution automates the recording process and enables metadata tagging at the start of transmission. The files can be trimmed and then only the required content transferred to the Media Asset Management (MAM) system. This way TV Asahi can record everything while saving on MAM storage.

The Workflow

For recording content transmitted via LiveU units, three rack-mounted LiveU Ingest servers were used, enabling simultaneous real-time recording of up to nine live video feeds. The recorded video was trimmed through the LiveU Ingest portal browser to extract the necessary scenes in real-time. The extracted clips were edited and saved to the MAM system.

To streamline metadata management, the team could select pre-configured metadata from LiveU Central at the start of live transmission or update the video name from the portal during or after the recording. This metadata was then automatically converted to the company’s proprietary format on the LiveU Ingest server.

The Results

Using LiveU Ingest, TV Asahi could significantly scale up the number of recordings for the election and reduce the time and manual effort required for the entire process, including video content metadata entry. The production team could quickly choose and easily edit the required content through the web browser.

"At TV Asahi, we have been developing the integration of LiveU Ingest with our MAM system since its use at the G7 Hiroshima Summit in 2023. For this House of Representatives election, we leveraged the newly implemented 'Ingest To MAM' feature to build a one-click workflow through a custom metadata conversion tool. We’ve also enabled partial transfers by setting IN-OUT points on the browser interface. During election specials, content floods in from across the country immediately after voting ends. By replacing baseband recording with LiveU Ingest, we ensured sufficient live transmission lines and avoided bottlenecks in the recording systems."
