Classroom learning from an aerial view

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) offers an Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Operations concentration, within the B.S. in Aerospace degree. The program, first of its kind in the state of Tennessee and among one of only a handful in the United States, is combining classroom learning with outside fieldwork to prepare students for careers in agriculture, public safety, photography,

media, disaster response/management, power and electric, defense department positions, and an endless list of other potentials. Technology partners like LiveU give students a chance to get their hands on IP video solutions that integrate with drones, emergency operations apps, and other technologies for mission-critical visual intelligence.

Real-world training exercise

MTSU collaborated with LiveU to provide overwatch at a recent emergency training exercise at the Nashville International Airport (BNA). Mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the emergency drill, brought together state-level emergency management teams, airport personnel members of the TSA, state and local police, fire departments, medical teams, and other local agencies to coordinate efforts. The students leveraged drones and LiveU IP video to deliver high-quality live feeds of the events back to BNA’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for review, analysis, and quick decision making.

The mock emergency scenario entailed actual fire, smoke, and explosions to ensure airfield disaster preparedness and response of the airport.

"Our students played an important part in providing overwatch from all the drones we deployed that day, which helped the EOC direct efforts in real-time. The drill gave students a unique opportunity to think on their feet during the coordinated emergency effort, as well as get acquainted with live video/drone workflows that they will likely encounter in the real world."

Kevin Corns Ph.D., Associate Professor of Aerospace at Middle Tennessee State University

Quick deployment time

LiveU easily integrates with drones, providing a 1, 2, 3 setup process to get them connected, in the air, and streaming to desired individuals and/or control and command centers in less than 5 minutes. In mission-critical situations, time is of the essence. MTSU students are learning how to work in fast-paced, evolving situations and utilize drones to assist in these efforts.

“Our program prepares students for thousands of new jobs created in many industries as unmanned aircraft systems have become a major fixture in the future of aviation worldwide. This Aerospace concentration includes hands-on courses on building and flying unmanned aircraft systems, optional manned pilot training to earn a private pilot license, core aerospace courses, and participation with industry partners like LiveU. What they are learning in the field is invaluable for their careers.”

Kevin Corns Ph.D., Associate Professor of Aerospace at Middle Tennessee State University

Every day uses

The MTSU Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operations Program is highly respected across the campus and the state. Students assist with site inspections, mapping, agriculture, and a myriad of other uses cases. While the program is fairly new, Professor Corns sees the major continue to grow and their use of LiveU to expand as the students are in high demand to support more emergency training exercises and events.
