The Challenge

The Ocean Cleanup nonprofit deployed a new interceptor in LA county to prevent trash from reaching the Pacific Ocean. To mark this checkpoint in the organization’s journey, the crew broadcast the entire towing of the operation live from onboard Interceptor 007 in the Pacific Ocean, as well as from Headquarters in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This is where crew members (and special guests) monitored the operation, shared stories, and discussed where the organization is and where they’re going with their mission. The REMI production required coordination among production teams and tech vendors and partners on different continents. Connectivity to power the stream was an early concern. Factors included the element of streaming offshore, interference from a nearby airport, and the overall cell congestion of LA and its crowded metropolis.

“I don’t think it’s possible for us to have done this without LiveU”

Dan van der Kooy, Executive Producer of Documentary Content, The Ocean Cleanup

The Solution

Dan van der Kooy, the organization’s Exec Producer of Documentary Content, orchestrated the live production of the first cleanup system trialed in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The 7-camera live broadcast featured a REMI production workflow with LiveU at the core. The success of this production led van der Kooy to call on LiveU and Key Code Media to support the 5.5 hour live broadcast. With the new LU800 production-level solution supporting 4 high-res, fully frame-synced feeds from a single portable unit, the team had a robust solution to transport live content directly to the team in the Netherlands from several locations including The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica.  The live broadcast was deemed a success and viewed by thousands globally.

“With the LiveU, we’ve been streaming from the whole journey. We had so many different cameras streaming live at the same time. We were able to cover the story from all possible angles.”

Valentina Marinelic, Creative Content Producer, The Ocean Cleanup
