Geekie Awards

The Geekie Awards, an award show held by geeks for geeks, was held on October 15th at the Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA.

To quote the Geekies, “Our mission is to create a fun, action-packed, unforgettable broadcast event tailored to all of the things we geeks love: entertainment, gaming, products and art—delivered via the latest digital technologies.”

Some of this latest digital technology was used behind the scenes too, bringing the first-hand live experience online for fans everywhere. Geeks globally were able to watch and be a part of the action not only at the awards ceremony, but at the pre-show bash, the red carpet and backstage.

We spoke with Cricket Wheeler, Executive Producer of Encore Streaming and Shahnti Brook, producer of the Geekie Awards about what went into putting these events together.

Geekie Awards Setup smaller

As the show’s pre-party bash, red carpets, and awards event were all taking place in different locations, having easy-to-use, small encoders to capture and stream wirelessly to a virtual server for sharing via Ustream, was super important. That is why the Geekies approached us for help with the right solution.

Cricket was on a tight time frame and had to begin testing the LU500 and Xtender the day it had arrived to her. Thankfully, Cricket and her team found no problems in getting started immediately with their LiveU devices.

“Set-up was smooth, and within minutes of set-up we were able to live stream and test channels,” she said. “But then, we had concern about having to rush from the red carpet to the theater to set up for the start of the show.”

“We were able to go live from three different locations during the two days of the Geekie Awards, which would not have been possible without LiveU,” Cricket continued. “The LiveU unit was able to be easily repositioned from the tripod to the backpack so our on-camera talent was able to go mobile seamlessly without losing the live shot.”

The LiveU unit also allowed the production team to switch channels right from the LCD display on the front of the LU500 unit, which again, saved time and concern in getting the live shot.

She continued, “Going live from the backstage of Club Nokia was a scary prospect. There were hundreds of cell users in the location and the backstage area was an extremely constricted, but with LiveU, we were able to pull a stronger signal while maneuvering into tight spaces to quickly get our shot.”

Shahnti also shared her previous experience with LiveU. Since 2011 she had the opportunity to work with LiveU’s bonded solutions versus more costly fiber and satellite. When she looks for cost-effective solutions that provide the freedom for on-the-go live coverage, she, “would never have been able to produce live events online if not for LiveU”. She is very familiar with the difficulties broadcasters face, and sees LiveU as the ultimate solution for producers looking to reduce cost and still get a reliable shot.

“Unfortunately, a lot of smaller-scale producers aren’t aware of LiveU’s technology, and I think more producers should be exposed to it. It has worked as the perfect solution for me with every project that I do; this year’s Geekie Awards Show was no exception!” said Shahnti.
